ballet tech ohio presents 'Green Legs and Ham'

By Alison Momeyer

If you’ve ever read a Dr. Seuss book aloud, then you’re familiar with the melodic nature of the writing. Dr. Seuss stories rhyme and are silly. They weave fantastic characters into improbable situations --a cat that makes a mess of your home when your parents are out; a boy who wears 500 hats, a turtle names Yertle-- Once you read a Dr. Seuss book, it’s hard to shake the words out of your head.

Given these elements, it only makes sense that someone would decide to bring Dr. Seuss’s words to life through dance and music. March 4-6, ballet tech ohio performing arts association will produce “Green Legs and Ham,” an interactive performance designed for “multi-generation family fun.” Staged at the Aronoff Center for the Arts , the show will be narrated my radio personalities Brian O’Donnel and Mark Perzell from WGUC public radio.

According to ballet tech’s executive producer and board president, Marvel Gentry Davis, the program is guaranteed to entertain even the youngest (and wiggliest) audience members: “The characters in the ballet interact with the audience by requesting the audience to respond in certain sections of the ballet.” The program will feature guest dancer Oliver Arana performing alongside a diverse cast selected from the Greater Cincinnati area.

Like all ballet tech productions, “Green Legs and Ham” has a higher goal than mere entertainment; the organization was created to “education, entertain and amaze by providing diverse and innovative performances that have a phenomenal community impact.” “Green Legs and Ham” was created to promote literacy by drawing upon the work of one of the world’s most beloved children’s authors. In the words of 13-year old poetry contest winner Kristi Betz: “it may leave you feeling like taking a look at a certain Seuss Book.”

In association with the performances, a poetry and poster contest generated public interest and many colorful entries. The poster is shown as the graphic that accompanies this article. Those interested in reading Betz’s poem in its entirety, may access it at ballet tech’s Web site: http://www.ballettechohiopaa.org/2004-2005/greenlegs/GLHcontestgallery.htm.

In addition to the performances at the Aronoff, there are several free, public sampler performances coming up. Follow the links below for details.

Tickets for the March performances are available for $20 at the Aronoff Center and Music Hall box offices or by calling: (513) 621-ARTS. ETA/START, senior and group rates are available as well as a half-price family four packs.
